Thanks for organising Jan.  Rae and Wietze took the long way around the Marton Tataenui Reservoir, completing the figure 8 and ducking on and off the MTB track to rack up 9.5km on a 5.5km track.
A quick visit to the Settlers Museum in Hunterville before tracking others down at Vinegar Hill campground (Al, Irene, Peter and Karen Wards and Jan). Most of the rest of the day and the next morning was spend problem solving the Wards errant awning which would not retract! A lot of Kiwi ingenuity and bits and pieces supplied from all the motorhomes was required to retract it safely.
A short walk to the extremes on either side of the campground was about all that was managed for the rest of the day.   On Sunday Irene and Jan headed home, while the rest of us headed into the Limestone Creek Reserve and the glow worm cave.  A short but wet walk up a creek with drips from above, a pretty spot though. Then back to Apiti Tavern for drinks, food and to spend the night. The village was very pretty with flowering magnolias and cherry trees lining the streets.
Monday morning Al and the Wards headed off for more adventures while Rae and Wietze headed back to Hunterville and a 46km return ride of the top end of the Three Rivers Heartland trail.
Oh and I forgot to mention the bird life on our bike ride - peacocks, turkeys, kereru, pheasants, cockatoos,  kingfishers and magpies. Wietze was dive bombed around 12 times by the magpies, twice they made contact with his helmet (they liked the red!).

Seven of us enjoyed a stroll along a well formed forestry road. Nice day/surroundings outdoors. Bit of exploring found us an old house site/gardens and some cool faces carved into the cliff. Thanks too Alistair who slaved his way up to the lodge with a full 18kg propane bottle! Bruce with a full pack load of firewood! Bryce, Harry & Jack who worked like Beavers as well. A job well done I would say.

Based at Ohakune, we took a shuttle to the start of the Mangapurua track, rode through to the Bridge to Nowhere, jet boated out to Pipiriki and then the shuttle back to Ohakune. 36km riding, uphill to start, a stop at the trig to look at the view and the dynamite cave, then on the long downhill all the way to the Bridge. Early lunch stop at Johnsons clearing on the way. A 4 to 6 hour trip done in 4 hours, happy with that. Out of Al, Werner and Wietze, Rae was not the cleanest at the end! Thanks for a great day and help over some of the bridges guys.
Jan and her girls joined us for the evening.
Werner stayed on for more riding Sunday, the rest of us moved on elsewhere.

]]><![CDATA[Tarere road - sunday 30th november]]>Mon, 01 Dec 2025 18:35:14 GMThttps://www.mtegmontalpineclub.org.nz/events/tarere-road-sunday-30th-novemberWith a deteriorating weather forecast, we set off from the top of Ball Road to walk Okie’s Ridge and return via Alan Rogers farm.
Thanks to Fiona & Hugh McColl for access through their farm and a cut track along the ridge where they maintain a trap line.
It is a lovely walk mostly on the bush covered ridge but at times, along an old benched bridle path that dates back to the early day of breaking in the hill country.
We made it to Tarere Trig before lunch and then started our return route through the open Dept of Conservation tops that gave great views of South Taranaki.
From there, we entered Alan Rogers property and arrived back to his house just beating the forecast rain.  Perfect timing for our 14 km tramp.

We began and finished in Brooklands Park, rambling through pockets of bush joined up by little right of ways, passing Highlands school, Brooklands Church and the Bowl, an hour and a half ramble. Back to the cars to Cumberland St bridge where we started out on Te Henui. Some of us did a short walk by the river, the rest headed uphill and skirted around the old Te Henui cemetery. And as usual we debriefed over an enjoyable lunch at Stumble Inn.

The forecast was for rain but we arrived in sunshine. We split into two groups, the faster group did a circuit to Piwakawaka Family Hut, to Pouakai summit, returning via a very muddy Summit track. The other group did a return trip to the Hut on a well surfaced track, the clean option. And of course we enjoyed a great lunch at the Rainforest Cafe. 10 of us enjoyed a great day out.

It's an impressive structure sleeping 34 people. Interestingly it has been built to withstand winds up to 300km!
